The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has made a significant decision to extend the food fishery in Newfoundland and Labrador, a move that has been long awaited by residents and a step towards addressing historical inequities. This decision comes after a survey revealed a strong desire among Newfoundlanders and Labradorians for a more consistent and equitable fishing experience, mirroring the practices in the Maritime provinces.
The extension will affect several areas, including the Avalon Peninsula, the northeast coast from Trinity Bay to the Great Northern Peninsula, and the southeast coast of Labrador. From Canada Day to Labour Day, the food fishery will operate seven days a week in these regions, providing a boost to local fishing communities and potentially impacting the tourism industry.
However, the south and west coasts of the island will continue to have a three-day-a-week fishery due to the less favorable cod stocks in those areas. This decision is a strategic balance, ensuring the sustainability of the fish population while meeting the demands of the local population.
The daily bag limit remains at 5 groundfish per person, but the 15-fish per boat limit has been eliminated, which could significantly impact commercial fishing operations. Minister Joanne Thompson emphasizes that while officials will not actively 'police' fishermen, they will enforce laws against the illegal sale of fish, a crucial aspect to prevent market distortions and ensure fair practices.
The extension has received bipartisan support, with MHAs endorsing it unanimously in the House of Assembly.
